True Female Empowerment

16 May

Angelina Jolie

Tuesday, I woke up at 6am to my alarm and my husband asking me if I read Angelina Jolie’s Op Ed in the NYTimes. Obviously, I hadn’t because I was sleeping. By now everyone knows what the actress very honestly explained in detail she had undergone.

To have a double mastectomy is an extremely brave thing to do and in a case like Ms. Jolie’s completely necessary. She has children that she must be a healthy mother for. Even if she didn’t have kids, she is a woman who has a long life ahead of her thanks to this procedure. I, for one, wouldn’t think twice about the decision to remove my breasts and have reconstructive surgery and don’t know many who would debate the options very long. How lucky we are to live in this modern world where that is a very viable choice?

While there is much to think about when it comes to genetic testing, which is now a part of the national dialogue thanks to this Op Ed, another side of the story is, as women, our emotional attachment to our breasts. Our breasts are something that make us who we are… no seriously. Big or small, they are, for many of my friends, something that does define part of who we are as women.

My breasts were the first visible sign that I had stepped into womanhood as well as a big (no pun intended) indicator that I was  pregnant. My boobs are the reason I can’t wear some clothes and can fill out others well. The “ladies” are not only what make me feel incredibly sexy but also what sustained my child for 6 plus months.  I would give them a twitter account if anyone really cared to hear what they were thinking (but it would probably be a little dirty!).

So, while it is a no brainer choice to have them removed in the case of life or death, it should also be acknowledged that our breasts are a very personal asset.

True Love

So, I’m having a little issue. I feel quite overwhelmed with a desire to throw out the old and totally change my entire way of thinking about a subject that I was have been set in my ways about for years.

When my tatas shrink to oblivion (after child #4) then my silver lining will be this STUNNING BRALET!

I LOVE THE BRALET! I literally loath the thought of wearing a padded bra ever again. And why should I need to?

I’m the first person to admit that breastfeeding may have left my child nourished, but where did the girls go exactly? After one gorgeous babe, I find the ladies look, well, a little deflated. It’s cool and totally worth it but I don’t think it gets better with plus enfants.

Zinke Harper Bralet in Navy

So, yes, I like a little support for my now littler boobies. That’s where the affair began — just a little something to wear around the house or to run a quick errand.

The Sweetie is all lace but we love to pair it under tanks so that the fem details pop just a bit. And c’mon, how big is lace right now? Let it show!

But, something has changed and now I am in full blown, losing my mind love for the bralet.  Wear under anything – tees, tanks, sweaters – they are beyond comfy and totally freeing.

The Aire from Cosabella is perfect under tees. PS, we like color under white….

My boobs may be shrinking, but they’re still a C/D so my personal faves are the Eberjey India and the Fortnight Ophelia. Need a little more nipple coverage, try the Free People Crop Bra is a great choice for the double lining. Gorgeous options are the ZInke Harper and Cosabella Elise – both new and fairly gorgeous – especially with the matching knickers! New colors are coming in for the favorite itty bitty Eberjey Delirious so stay tuned. And one that I have much love for especially peeking out from underneath a tank is the Cosabella Sweetie… necessary for just about everyone of us!

I wear this gorgeous bralet just about everyday… so much that I needed in every color!

Designer Showcase: Fortnight Lingerie byMollie

The Jolene Slip is stunning. We suggest wearing it around the house for Date Night in with a cardi — as the night progresses take that cardi off. Your lover will thank you! Or, you could just wear it outside?!

In a world where everything is so the same, I hope to bring products to people that are unique, beautifully constructed, and not accessible from your local J.Crew. I am also attempting to create an environment for women to find lingerie that is well made.

The difference between a well constructed, beautifully designed piece of lingerie can change a woman’s world. So, when I met Melissa of  Understated Showroom and she introduced me to Fortnight, I was like YES!! This is what I’m talking about! I could only choose a few pieces because I had spent all my Spring money, but what I chose really spoke to me, and hopefully the byLangley woman!

Image

I love the lace behind of these bottoms. But, that bralet is pretty unbeatable in terms of construction, support, and beauty!

To give you more insight into Fortnight Lingerie, we interviewed designer Christina Remenyi. Her team sews each piece by hand,  in her small atelier in Toronto. She believes in craftsmanship, which, sadly, is a lost art in design. In this world of fast fashion, each piece of Fortnight is like a little piece of affordable couture

When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

I used to sew all the time with my grandmother when I was younger.  I think that sparked a deep excitement for designing and creating.

What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?

The soft colours and streamlined design details were inspired by the movie, the Royal Tenenbaums and the quirky, sophisticated daydreamer Margot Tenenbaum.

What made you decide to use a wider size range in your line?

It’s really shocking that so few sizes are typically available to the North American consumer vs European. This really never made sense to me.  Because fit plays such a huge role in the impact and value of lingerie, I wanted to design a line that was accessible and wearable for women of many shapes and sizes.

Who is the woman that you design for?

This is such a common question, but so difficult to answer. Simply put, Fortnight Lingerie is for women who love craftsmanship and design.

Favorite piece you’ve designed?

The bodysuit.  I wear it with everything!

Thong, bikini, or boyshort?

Bikini

Image

Always the bikini with Fortnight Lingerie.

Favorite vacation spot?

Italy

What inspired the name of your line?

When choosing a name, we were particularly inspired by strong, timeless and nostalgic words. I was drawn to the semiotics of the word, rather than its literal meaning. The root words, fort (strong), and night made it an interesting and alluring choice.

Favorite guilty pleasure?

The Celebrity Apprentice

What do you do just for you?

Visit an art gallery.

Describe your perfect Friday night.

Meeting up with friends after work, drinking wine, eating and laughing.

What sets your designs apart from other lines?

Craftsmanship and the philosophy that each piece should be designed to stand alone or compliment a woman’s wardrobe.

Fortnight Lingerie is a handcrafted product.  Because it’s made in house, in small, controlled batches, our team can pay close attention to every stitch, seam and detail ensuring the most perfect fit.   It makes each piece feel as though it’s crafted just for you.  I think that feeling is hard to come by in todays mass manufactured market.

Preferred lounging attire?

Leggings and a loose, flowing top.

What do you sleep in?

Slips or I have a couple of my boyfriend’s old vintage tshirts that I love.

Most exciting/gratifying moment of your career thus far?

Being interviewed by Fashion Television, a show I grew up watching.

Describe your design process.

Fabric plays a huge role in our design process, so this is where I usually start.   I gather up my design and colour references, sample many different fabrics and start testing each one to see what will work best for our designs. Then we create sample after sample, testing for the perfect fit.

The first word that comes to mind when you’re asked to describe your line?

Fresh.

To you, what is the most important aspect of any lingerie?

Craftsmanship.   This is why it’s such an integral part of our design philosophy.

Which designers were/are you most inspired by?

Isabel Marant, Balenciaga, Phoebe Philo and Martin Margiela

Favorite shade of lipstick?

Coral

What is your regimen for keeping your skin looking fresh?

I’m really picky about what I put on my skin.  I wash my face with Neem soap and follow with Emu oil from an amazing Canadian line of natural beauty products called Earth to Body.  I SWEAR by this stuff and have gotten so many of my friends hooked on it too.

What was the inspiration behind your “Super Sexy CPR” video?

How did the virality of the video impact sales?

The idea behind Super Sexy was to create a campaign was to shake up typical lingerie advertising. The success of the video continues to inspire me.  We are over 12 million hits to date.  As you can imagine, this has played a huge role in the growth of a small lingerie line from Canada!

Describe a typical day at work.

I’m closely involved in every aspect of our garments creation.  Most days I’m in production and part of the sewing process.  I usually wake up early, start with an espresso and tend to emails, fabric orders and management work.  The girls (my sewing staff) usually arrive at 9am and we get right into sewing for the whole day.   Right now I’m in the midst of planning a new collection which is really exciting.  I start with searching for new fabrics, then we go through a rigorous testing stage, where we make sample after sample to ensure the fabrics performance ability and to perfect the fit of each new style.

This bralet is so versatile! Sex it up or just use it for support, it really is a must have for the byLangley woman!

When I am looking for lingerie that makes sense for the byLangley woman, I look for pieces that are both practical and full on sexy. I don’t know about you, but I am not into buying items that have only one occassion or purpose. This lovely bralet from Only Hearts fits the bill. It is so beautiful with gorgeous lace details and a black and nude color way that is very now. Paired with the matching Coucou Coulotte (yes, those are crotchless) and the stunning LouLou Garter Tank, you truly have a lingerie look that is both totally sophisticated and utterly sexy.

Image

This sheer tank actually opens you up for about a million styling options! So cool, chic, and sexy!

Cookoo! Cookoo! Surprise!

But, we are definitely complex individuals and not every moment of our lives is so totally glam. For those nights when you are brought down to reality, this bra is what you will want to wear. Thanks to the longline construction, this piece offers more support which is what we all need on those nights when dinner is burning and the baby is freaking out! Throw on a comfy pair of Organic Cotton Tap Pants and a your favorite hoodie over this bralet and you will still feel desirable — even if everything around you does not!

PS — Great bralet fit for larger girls. Definitely supports a C cup. Adjustable straps are also a major plus!

May’s Lust/Must: The Bralet!! byMollie

I really believe in LUSTS and MUSTS!! What we have to have and what we need! Each month, I will spotlight two items that fall in these categories. I’d love to hear from you — what are your LUSTS & MUSTS!

This May, I have chosen the Brulee Noir Bralet as our LUST item! It really is pretty spectacular! The black lace pops with a stunning fuscia silk that lays flat. Corset detailing make this very soft and comfortable bra totally luxurious. Pair it with the equally gorgeous (and totally sexy) Brulee Noir Boyshort and stunningly sheer Noir Chemise for an over the top look that will have you feeling pretty, well, pretty! Or, bring it all down a notch — as we do here often at b to the l — and add a deep v-neck or scoop neck tee with comfy organic cotton shorts for an easy, breezy night at home. Either way, the bralet should definitely peek out. Don’t be afraid to show how fabulous it is even under a tank!

Image

We love this Citron color but also adore the rainbow of other choices available!

If you aren’t quite sure that the bralet is for you, but want to try one on for size to see how it works, then our MUST of the Month is the beautiful Cosabella Sweetie Soft Bra. Let me start off by saying that I wear this practically every night  of life! With wonderful, adjustable straps and more coverage than so many of the other bralets this is a great item to have in your top drawer and wear under chemises and camis, specifically. I truly encourage any and everyone to check this stellar bralet out and pair with the overly comfortable matching thong or boyshorts. Spending under a $100 for a little luxury? Always a plus!!

The Undrest bralets in neon colors look great popping out from underneath a sheer tank!

This look is so byLangley. Totally supportive, soft, and sexy!

askMollie for Valentine’s Day! byMollie

Do you hate Valentine’s Day? You are not alone! So many of my friends and acquaintences lament this “hallmark” holiday.

It should come as no surprise that I love love. For goodness sake, I started an e-boutique that is based on my passion for lingerie! But, I am by no means a hopeless romantic and have been gifted with some incredibly cute (or possibly cheesy) items in Valentine’s Day of the past. Our men really do love us, but probably need a little help when it comes to finding just the right piece that will make us not feel like we’re playing dress up. I’m sure that I’m not alone in wanting beautiful and sexy (that is not a bad word ladies) lingerie. But it is probably more effective to guide our men to the right place for help!

Just slip a little hint, “I really love this new site from a cool girl with great taste!” Or maybe leave a little post it note on the bathroom mirror — “Valentine’s Day is next Tuesday. EMAIL ASKMOLLIE@byLANGLEY.com”. Then, I’ll take it from there. Listen, lingerie is totally intimidating, but let’s help our men out. The poor things only think that Vicky’s Secret is the only option out there and we are here to stand solidly against that thinking!!

OooooPRAH!!! byMollie

20 Jan

If you look very closely, squinting your eyes even, you will see that yes byLangley.com is featured as the place to shop in O The Oprah Magazine this February. As my mother can attest to after dragging me to Oprah’s top bra stores in NYC, O knows a thing or two about bras (but not necessarily bralets) and her team chose the incredible Zinke Fireside Bralet & High Rise Knicker as  featured items for their Valentine’s Day picks.  I love these pieces so much and can’t wait to get my hands on them and out to you ASAP — all Zinke’s spring collection should be here within the next few weeks.

XOXO! Image
